Regular oral examinations and hygiene cleanings at Highmoor Dental can help our Edmonton patients to prevent dental issues from arising in the first place and maintain healthy smiles.
Regular oral examinations, ideally scheduled twice per year, give your dentist the chance to identify oral health issues and to make a plant for appropriate treatment.
During your exam, your dentist will take a close look at the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Exams may also include dental x-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral cancer affects any part of your mouth and the surrounding tissues. During your routine exam, your dentist will check your face, neck, lips, gums tissues and throat for any signs of oral cancer which are otherwise difficult to detect with the naked eye.
In order to keep your smile healthy between routine dental cleanings, make sure your brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, and floss at least once per day.
Either before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will perform a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums in order to treat oral diseases.
Firstly, they will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar built up in your mouth. After that, they will use a polisher and a coarse toothpaste to remove leftover plaque or stains on your teeth. They will finish with a comprehensive flossing of your gums and teeth.
If you or your child has a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help to rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
